On June 23rd, we moved to Catawissa, PA. You just gotta love that name, don't ya think?! Just a pretty, green, wooded and agricultural area. And the surprising location for a huge amusement park! Knoebels started out as "Peggy's Farm" in 1775 but transitioned over the centuries into what is now the USA's largest free admission amusement park!
On the 25th I took the dogs for a long sightseeing drive... Here are some of the sights!
First stop was in Lock Haven, where we walked a short ways down a long paved trail. Running alongside the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, this walk pays homage to the "Hometown Heroes" of Clinton County, PA, with banners celebrating the men and women of our armed forces. It was a great place and great path but a bit too warm that day for us (esp. the furry ones) to stay too long.
Because of the heat, I kept looking for a place to pull over and let the dogs get a drink and play in the river, but there really weren't any! Until we got to this little park - and alas, while it was lovely, its river access wasn't that great and was tainted with kind of yucky, foamy-looking water on the banks. Not great dog water...
But still good for a romp - although I didn't want the dogs getting too hot and thirsty at this spot!
OK, things are starting to look up!
Ah finally! Somewhere beautiful and clean, away from the roads, where we can all run and dip our toes in the river - or the creek, actually! The Kettle Creek that is, at state park of same name. In the Susquehannock State Forest. We really got our moneys worth out of this place! Wait, it was free... Oh well, it was worth a whole lot more than that!! By the time we reached this spot, I'd about given up hope on finding a place where we could just pull over and enjoy the surroundings!
Just like San Diego, eh? HAH!!! NOT!!! Gorgeous green, trees, clouds, and rivers. Mmm...
Only downer was it was still too hot, but high temps are a lot more bearable when there's cool water to swim in!!!
Check out that flag!
Just shake it off!
But didn't get far till there was another necessary photo stop (of course!).
Pretty damn good traveling partners!
Just look at that adorable dog!!!
A short drive down a side road and a quick look at some more beautiful forest. We passed someone who said they'd just seen a big rattler on a trail there. Boy, I wanted to go see it too, but it was getting late and we really didn't have time. I also didn't want to chance it with the dogs - a lot harder to keep them safe from snakes with all the lush ferns and grass! Much lower ground visibility than in dry, more barren San Diego!
