Our next stop was the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). A bit disappointing because of the cloudy weather and lack of birds, one element made the long drive worthwhile nonetheless - my new favorite - alligators!
The NWR had a loop drive that followed alongside mud-lined canals. You never knew where you might see a gator! It was like a more exciting Easter egg hunt!! And for those of you who know how much I love Easter egg hunts - well, I was in my element!
Most of the gators were pretty small (probably around 3 ft long), but we did see this one dude, who was probably more like 5-6 feet. This guy was right out in the open, relatively speaking, but most of them were more hidden/camouflaged.
And after a full afternoon of gator hunting, we took another ferry back home. It was a fairly long wait for our ferry to come get us, but we had a very colorful sunset to enjoy meanwhile!
Spotting animals in the wild is awesome. We found so many alligators down in the Everglades last year. I took so many photos! Liked your pic of that big guy.
After a few trips in a smaller, used motorhome, we decided we liked all that adventuring so much, we came home and traded in our RV for a bigger one, moved out of our house and rented it, moving into our little yurt in the back country of a certain southern CA county - all in one month! We started out afresh then as full-time RVers - my husband, two cats, two dogs, and I. And indeed, our first year with our new Winnebago Tour, we were out from Jan. to Nov. However, due to health issues and trying to avoid the cold wintery weather found in so much of our country, subsequent years have seen us only out for about 6 months, scurrying back to sunny, mild southern Calif. come fall.
I am amazed at all we've seen and the wonderful people we've met. Come share it with us...
